Trump goes to heaven

I want to go to heaven. This could be the extreme phase of what everyone calls Trump’s supernarcissism. The ultimate aspiration, giving that term, Paradise, not only a spiritual connotation, but also the metaphorical sense of one who looks up, to great goals.

The American president wants to put the medal of peace in Ukraine on his chest, the American president wants to put the Nobel Peace Prize on his chest. I have already written about it here in the Newyorker several times and always with great freedom and above all free from the prejudices and snobbery of mainstream correctness that is now, in the West, more globalized than the exchange of goods. Above all I claim the honest, common-sense interpretation of what happened in Alaska. No triumphalism but neither is that journalistic nihilism that preaches peace as ideological platonism.

In short, it is either as I say or no deal. Instead, the supposed victory of Putin’s arrogance is, still in these hours, the victory of Trump’s immense patience, who, not giving a damn about the August liturgies, wasted no time and summoned European leaders including Italian PM Giorgia Meloni to Washington ( the others: Merz, Starmer, Macron. Stubb and then Von der Leyen and Rutte), summoned Zelensky, his diplomacy is brigading with Moscow to organize the famous, and hopefully decisive trilateral: US, Russia, Ukraine.

The disputes, the distances, the disagreements are still many, from location, to truce, to territories. In all honesty, though, had it ever come to this since that tragic February of 2022? After Alaska, almost all analysts agreed that Putin had been cleared at no cost, that he had emerged from global isolationism on a red carpet and without making concessions. We disagreed; in our opinion on the contrary, the Czar had been welcomed back into a complex diplomatic system from which he could no longer get out for free.

Anything, even negative, can still happen. We are optimistic, we want to be optimistic. If the language of geopolitics fails and only weapons will then speak, at that point Trump will have to give up heaven, but Putin will definitely go to hell.
