The Global Citizen Festival returns to New York on September 27 with a new edition on the Great Lawn in Central Park. The event, which attracts thousands of people every year, will see artists such as Shakira, Cardi B – recently become the new voice of the New York Metro ads –, Tyla, Ayra Starr and Mariah the Scientist. The direction of the show is once again entrusted to Hugh Jackman, who leads it from the beginning of 2012. Next to him, Bill Nye, Adam Lambert, Danai Gurira and Liza Koshy were announced as co-conductors.
The festival is promoted by Global Citizen, an international advocacy organization founded in 2008 in Australia and now active in more than 150 countries. The event also serves to raise funds for the fight against extreme poverty and the promotion of concrete actions to address climate change, access to education and sustainable development. Over the years, through the event and related campaigns, financial and political commitments have been promoted that have contributed to health, environmental and educational projects.
Tickets are not for sale: are obtained by participating in voluntary initiatives and awareness through the Global Citizen website or app. The actions required range from signing petitions to sharing campaigns, to direct support for local associations. Each activity generates valid points to access the entry pass lottery. It is a model that has remained unchanged since the first edition, designed to tie the participation in the concert to civic engagement.
For 2025, the priorities indicated by the organization are three: bring electricity to one million people in Africa, mobilize $200 million to protect 30 million hectares of Amazon forest and ensure education to 30,000 children in collaboration with FIFA. At local level, the festival also aims to involve 40,000 citizens of New York in volunteering activities in the five districts, with programs ranging from school tutoring to urban redevelopment.
The Global Citizen Festival has become a permanent appointment in the city’s cultural calendar. Over the years, the Great Lawn stage hosted stars like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Coldplay and Billie Eilish. In addition to musical resonance, the festival has become a political and institutional showcase: Representatives of governments, international leaders and public figures used this space to announce financial commitments and multilateral initiatives related to global development.
