Suspect arrested in Sharon verzeni murder case after a month of investigation

After a month-long investigation, authorities have arrested a suspect in the murder of 33-year-old Sharon Verzeni, who was brutally stabbed to death in Terno d’Isola, in the Bergamo province, on the night of July 29-30, 2024. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Moussa Sangare, an Italian citizen originally from another country, was detained by the Carabinieri on the night of August 29-30. Sangare, who was captured on surveillance footage fleeing the crime scene on a bicycle, has since confessed to the killing. He is unemployed, born in Milan, and resides in Suisio, a town just a few kilometers from the crime scene.

Despite having no prior criminal convictions, Sangare was already under investigation for domestic abuse against his mother and sister, including an incident where he allegedly threatened his sister with a knife. This investigation was still ongoing at the time of his arrest. According to local residents, Sangare had a troubled relationship with his family, often engaging in loud arguments late at night. The premeditation charge has been added to his indictment as he reportedly left his home with four knives on the night of the murder. Investigators have ruled out any religious or terrorist motives for the crime.

In his confession, Sangare stated, “I had an impulsive outburst. I can’t explain why it happened, I saw her, and I killed her.” The Carabinieri spent weeks analyzing surveillance footage to identify and track him down. Sangare was arrested in a residence in the Bergamo area, with authorities citing “serious evidence of guilt” and concerns about the potential for him to commit further crimes, destroy evidence, or flee. Investigators believe that Sangare did not know Verzeni and had no prior contact with her before the murder.

Neighbors have provided troubling accounts of Sangare’s behavior in recent months. Raised in Suisio, he was known locally for his brief involvement in the music industry, collaborating with well-known Italian rappers like Izi and Ernia. However, neighbors also recall incidents of domestic violence, arson, and erratic behavior. Inside his home, the Carabinieri discovered a human-shaped cardboard cutout used for knife-throwing practice, which has been seized as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
