Mattarella “The UN is not superfluous diplomatic orpello, but a fundamental pillar of multilateralism. Support of Italy”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The eighteenth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Organization allows Italy to reaffirm its firm support for multilateralism, of which the UN, an international organization with universal vocation, constitutes the fundamental pillar.” The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, said this on the occasion of the 80th United Nations Day.

“At eighty years after its entry into force, it is irrelevant to underline the values of the Charter of the United Nations – articulated in the three pillars of peace, development and protection of human rights – and reaffirm the duty to promote them day after day, in support of the dignity of every people and of every person – added the Head of State –. The Italian commitment to the United Nations is absent from the foreign policy of our country, in accordance with Article 11 of the Constitution. To believe and invest in the United Nations means to act in order to transform into concrete actions the principle of international solidarity and a world order based on respect for the rules. It means promoting a logic of collaboration and respect among States, alternative to that of overwhelming. Convinces that today appear so much more fundamental and decisive in the face of impelling global challenges and the alarming spread of armed conflicts.”.

“The UN is not a superfluous diplomatic or forum of debate which is an end to itself: on it depend the fate of a Community of the pacified and cooperative States, realizing the noble ideals of those who conceived the institution after the immanent tragedies of the two world conflicts in the last century – he concluded. In this perspective, the Italian Republic remains strongly determined to commit itself so that the UN evolves into an organization that is increasingly capable of responding to the crisis and challenges of our time, supporting the initiative “UN80” initiated by the Secretary General and wishing for a reform of the Security Council that makes it more representative, responsible and effective.”.
