ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Nationalism to oppose other nationalisms is born, in the end, from considering other peoples as enemies, if not as abusive or even lower presences, to assert with prepotence and, often, with violence, claims of domination. For about thirty years all this seemed to be started to be archived in the past.” This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his speech at the conference “Osare la pace”, organized in Rome by the Community of Sant’Egidio.
“The end of the Cold War, with the Reagan-Gorbaciov dialogue and the openness to an enlightened global interdependence, seemed to open an era of peace – added the head of the state –. Today we compare with a very different scenario, even in Europe. The theme of force again demands to be a measure of international relations.”.
“The actions of force are but the premise of future oppositions. It is necessary to counter them,” added Mattarella. “For peace we need courage and a lot of work. But peace becomes, it is life and development. To the strength of the bully, the peaceful power of the institutions of peace must be countered,” said Mattarella.
“The news arrived in recent days from Gaza, after the agreements of Sharm El-Sheikh, with the first steps of understanding between the conflicting parties and the release of the hostages, remind us that peace processes need perseverance, patience, mediation work, taking responsibility.”.
Institutions, diplomats and many other “facilitators of peace”, including religious communities, carry out this work day after day, often far from the spotlight and without ambition to unnecessary external recognition – Mattarella said. I would like here – also as a pathotic for future developments – to recall a phrase of the Great Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmad Al-Tayeb who, speaking of peace and interreligious brotherhood, reiterated the need for all to raise “the banner of peace, instead of victory, and [sedersi] at the table of dialogue”. To the strength of power, the peaceful strength of the institutions of peace must be opposed.”.
“The hope is that the spark of hope, as Leo XIV has called it, triggered in the Holy Land, also extends to Ukraine, where the negotiating initiatives are still to take concreteness, while the sufferings of children, women and men brought from the ruthlessness of Russian aggression do not hint to diminish. What happens requires us to persevere in a common, balanced response, moved by the sense of justice and respect for international legality, by the universal vigence of human rights. These are the principles in which the Italian Republic is recognized,” concluded Mattarella.
