So the president of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, during the ceremony for “The days of research” Airc at the Quirinale.
“The new therapies have opened roads to life. The evidence of progress has also increased sensitivity to prevention. For some types of cancer, this has become a concrete public screening program. If the research was the first engine of all this, it is necessary to recognize that its value radiates far beyond the laboratories. The time of acceleration, moreover, concerns also the merit of research. It is a paradox that, in the presence of so many evidences, and in the full of a challenge that involves intelligence among the best of every continent, propaghino – in parallel to great progress – also discouraged anti-scientific theories. And that they take on parts – however small – of society. A phenomenon that does not save the most advanced societies, the most beneficial from the advances of science. “The Airc has researched its field. He has collected resources for programs of enormous value – thanks to the solidarity that has had the ability to arouse – and continues to do so: we have listened to it from the testimonies of today. Investing in research – he explained – is a medium-long term responsibility because research is a multiplier, social and economic, which acts on a large scale.
