ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Postal savings are 150 years, a century and a half in which the resources collected have allowed to realize strategic infrastructure works, finance local bodies and contribute to making Italy an economically and socially advanced country. The anniversary was celebrated today in Rome by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) and Poste Italiane who, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, celebrated the 150th anniversary of the launch of the Postal Books and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Good Postal Fruits: financial instruments guaranteed by the State that unite modernity, security and efficiency, issued by CDP and distributed by Poste Italiane and which have become authentic symbols of the trust placed by citizens in the state and engines of social progress. Books and Good Postal Fruits have helped to form a true culture of savings, which represents one of the strengths of the system-Italy.
Today we celebrate “a peaceful army of savings that mobilizes resources for the common good, moreover, some savers hold actions of Italian Posts. Capability and innovation have still characterized and mark the service rendered to citizens. We are here to talk about Italy, about what
united Italy has been able to produce and promote, united not only
territorially but that with initiatives and structures such as those we celebrate have joined the populations”, Mattarella explained.
The Vice-President of the Chamber Giorgio Mulè attended the event; the Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti; the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso; the presidents of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti e Poste Italiane, Giovanni Gorno Tempini e Silvia Maria Rovere; the CEO of CDP, Dario Scannapieco; the CEO of Poste Italiane, Matteo Del Fante; the General Manager of Poste Italiane, Giuseppe Lasco; representatives of the Italian, ecclesiastical and political institutions and over 200 mayors. The story begins in 1875: the Postal Book becomes the tool with which millions of Italians begin to deposit the savings in safe, accessible and guaranteed products from the State. Posts become the alternative to banks, especially for small savers, thanks to a capillary network of offices located in municipalities where access to financial services was more limited. Fifty years after the Libretti debut, the Good Postal Fruits are born, welcomed with great favor because an affordable investment and could be refunded at any time. The protection of postal savings becomes the most significant link between Cassa Depositi e Prestiti e Poste Italiane. A success certified by numbers: Today there are approximately 27 million subscribers of Goods and Postal Books for a total amount that, at 30 June 2025, reached 320 billion euros. “Today we celebrate a historical partnership, between Cassa Depositi e Prestiti e Poste Italiane, between the institutions and the Italian citizens who over the years have entrusted to CDP their own savings because it was safeguarded, but also because it turned into tangible growth for people, communities, territories. These resources – highlighted the president of CDP, Giovanni Gorno Tempini – have helped build, develop and modernize the great infrastructure networks creating foundations for the country’s progress. It is a story that shows that it does not need clamor to leave a deep mark. That the value of the public is built every day, in the concreteness of the choices and in the respect of the confidence received”. The president of Poste Italiane, Silvia Maria Rovere, is proud to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Postal Books and the centenary of the Good Fruits “that, during these years, have accompanied the history of our Country and the Italians who, in every age, have given and continue to give us confidence, investing their small and great savings in reliable, safe, profitable and guaranteed products. Postal savings have always been a very important voice of the national economy, a fundamental driving force for the development of the country that has created and will continue to create well-being for the community,” he adds. The CEO of CDP, Dario Scannapieco, points out that since “almost two centuries postal savings have been a fundamental lever for the development of the country, thanks to the trust of 27 million citizens who choose Goods and Postal Books. Cassa Depositi e Prestiti employs these resources with responsibility, supporting investments with high economic, social and environmental impact with an approach that has as its primary objective the benefits generated for the community. This is the deepest meaning of the mission of all women and men working on CDP: transforming savings into the future, with the awareness that working with commitment we can make the Italian economy and society stronger,” he concludes. The CEO of Poste Italiane, Matteo Del Fante, recalls that “the postal saving was the powerful engine that in 150 years gave Italy the strength and speed to transform itself from an essentially agricultural country to an industrial power. Since then, the indissoluble link between Cassa Deposite and Poste Italiane has been created, a combination that has been synonymous with development. The deep feeling that unites the attitude to the saving of citizens, the resources kept in the postal saving products and the investments that Cassa Depositi e Prestiti makes for the benefit of the territories, represent a real ‘social pact that remains very firm even after a century and a half of history,’ he concludes. Thanks to the postal savings millions of Italians were able to complete their projects of life and those of their families. The money collected was used by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti to finance the growth of the country by contributing to realize transport infrastructures such as roads, railways, ports, and energy networks and telecommunications, as well as the main places of living and social living, such as schools, hospitals and other works oriented to improve the quality of life of citizens. Over the years, support for small, medium and large enterprises has also been added to these activities and the commitment to promoting sustainable development abroad, particularly in emerging economies. With the collection of postal savings Cassa Depositi e Prestiti could finance – just to make some examples – the reclamation of the countryside at the end of the nineteenth century; the reconstruction of Messina and Reggio Calabria after the earthquake of 1908; the construction of the Maremma Railway; the extension of the telephone network, railway and the construction of highways; the reconstruction of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome; contribute to the reconstruction after the great emergencies, such as the disaster of the Vajont, the flood of Florence of 1966 and the Belice earthquake in 1968.
