Atp Finals, what happens in case of parity in the group stage? Rules and tournament format

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The season of the men’s tennis circuit is ready to live the last act of its calendar, the Nitto Atp Finals. For the fifth year in a row it is Turin to host the event, scheduled from 9 to 16 November at the Inalpi Arena. The challenge between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz is renewed, with the first to defend the title won last year and the second that instead seeks the triumph in a tournament that so far has never given him particular satisfaction.

The Nitto Atp Finals are distinguished, however, from the traditional tournaments of the Atp circuit in their mode. This explains in detail the formula and the regulation, with the specifications in case of arrival in parity in the group stage.

IL FORMAT

The Nitto Atp Finals start with a group stage both for the singular and for the double: eight players/teams are divided into two groups of four. You qualify for the event following the “PIF ATP Race To Turin” and the “PIF ATP Doubles Team Rankings” scheduled on Monday after the last ATP tournament in the calendar.

All single games are at the best of the three sets with tie-break, including the final. The double games are two sets (without advantage) and a Match Tie-break at 10.

COME VENGONO STILATI I GIRONI

The number 1 player/team is placed in Group A (named Connors group), number 2 in Group B (group Borg). The 3–4, 5–6, 7–8 draws take place in pairs, with the first draw of each pair inserted in Group A and the other ending in the B.

Each player/team plays against the other three of his own group. The winners of each group (best records) access the semifinals: Group 1st A meets Group 2nd, and vice versa. In case of parity after the group stage, the tie-break procedure applies.

COME FUNZIONA L’ACCESSO ALLE SEMIFINALI

The final classification of each group shall be determined by the first criterion applicable between the following:

a) More victories;
b) Most games played; (valid in case of withdrawals and entry of a reserve. A 2-1 record is higher than a 2-0; a 1-2 is higher than a 1-0).

c) If only two players/team end the group stage in the same: direct confrontation.

d) If three players/team end in parity:
– If three players have a win each, the player who played less than all three games is automatically eliminated and then between the remaining two with record 1-2, goes the nsemifinals who won in the direct match;
– Higher percentage of winning sets;
– Higher percentage of games won;
– The player’s position in the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday after the last ATP tournament of the year.

If these criteria were to produce a superior player (which ends at 1st place) or lower (which ends at 3rd place) with the remaining two in parity, then this would be resolved as a result of the direct confrontation.
