PARIGI (FRANCIA) (ITALPRESS) – The Court of Appeal of Paris accepted the request of the Procura for the granting of probation to the former French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. The measure enters into force today and Sarkozy can then leave the prison in the day, where it was from 21 October.
The request was formally submitted by the Prosecutor, who at the same time asked for the ban on Sarkozy to have contacts with the other defendants and witnesses of the judicial case for which he was convicted. The lawyers of the former head of the state had previously proposed judicial surveillance as an alternative to prison.
After the court’s decision to accept the release of Nicolas Sarkozy, one of his lawyers, Christophe Ingrain, told the press that “the next step” is “the appeal process”. “Our task now, for Nicolas Sarkozy and for us, is to prepare the hearing of appeal,” said Ingrain according to the French broadcaster Bfmtv. As regards the dismissal of the former President of the Republic, the lawyer noted that “it is a normal application of the law”.
Sarkozy was first sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment for attempting to obtain illicit funding under the 2007 presidential election campaign by Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. According to the accusation, the former French president would agree with Gaddafi the funding in exchange for political support to Libya. “I want everyone to be convinced of something: I never had the crazy idea to ask Mr. Gheddafi for any funding. I will never confess something I have not done,” said Sarkozy commenting on the sentence.
