NIAGARA (CANADA) (ITALPRESS) – Prior to the start of the Foreign Minister G7 in Niagara (Canada), Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani attended a meeting requested by Ukraine with the Foreign Ministers of Italy, Germany, France and the EU (EU members of the G7). According to a statement from the Farnesina, the aim of the meeting was to renew support for Ukraine in the light of the latest developments on the ground. Minister Tajani confirmed: “We are ready to provide all possible assistance to Kiev, with particular attention to energy and humanitarian resilience and defence, for which a 12th military aid package is being prepared. We will provide new generators and new technology to rehabilitate affected power plants, technical financial support.” Italy has so far allocated more than 100 million euros for Ukrainian energy resilience, including contributions and credits for the reconstruction of the energy system, the green transition and the protection of critical infrastructure. Tajani also reconfirmed the commitment to assist the Ukrainian armed forces in the context of the two EUAM and EUMAM European missions, and support for European SAFE and EDIP programmes for strengthening the European and Ukrainian defence industries.
With regard to the possible use of the frozen Russian funds, currently under discussion in Brussels, Minister Tajani highlighted the opening with which Italy addresses the debate on the subject, recalling how the compromise of 2024 on the loan from 50 billion in Kiev to rely on the profits of the immobilized Russian sovereign assets was reached under the Italian Presidency of the G7. In this regard, the Minister indicated that every solution respects the principles of legality, stability of the euro area and overall sustainability, also for the benefit of our future ability to continue supporting Ukraine. Food safety was also discussed, with a view to the fourth international summit in Kiev on 19 November, to which Italy will be present. Tajani then recalled that Italy has always supported the initiative “Grain from Ukraine”, in 2022 and 2024 with a total of 4 million Euros.
