Road accidents falling in the first half of 2025, dead and injured

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – According to the preliminary estimates published today by ACI eIstat, in the first half of 2025, in Italy, there was a decrease in road accidents with injuries to people, injured people and, above all, of the victims within the thirtieth day from the event. Between January and June 2025 there were 82.344 accidents with injuries to people (-1.3% compared to the same period of 2024), with 111.090 wounded (-1.2%) and 1.310 deaths (-6.8%). On average, 455 accidents, 614 injuries and more than 7 victims were reported every day, i.e. almost 19 accidents and almost 26 injuries every hour, a victim every three and a half hours. Looking at the last two decades, road accidents have been reduced by 60.1% compared to the first half of 2001. In recent years, however, progress appears slow. Compared to the first half of 2019 – the reference year chosen by the European Commission for the program “Road Safety Policy Framework 2021-2030”, which aims to reduce the victims by 50% and the injured by 2030 – in fact, a decrease in accidents (-1.5%) and injured (- 5.0%) and a more marked reduction in deaths (- 14.6%).

The decrease in the victims represents a progress towards European objectives, but the path to halving the dead on the roads by 2030 remains challenging. Compared to the first half of 2024, the victims increase on highways (+4.4%), while they decrease on urban roads (-8.4%) and on extra-urban roads (-7.1%). In general, accidents occur more often on urban roads (73.3%), but almost half of the victims (49.1%) are recorded on extra-urban roads, where the impacts are on average more severe. The comparison with 2019 shows, however, a more favorable situation for all types of road: the victims on the highways are less than 33.4%, while the decline is at 12.4% on the roads and 12.2% on the urban ones.

In the first four months of 2025, total highway traffic (about 80% of the network) increased by 0.3% compared to the same period of 2024: +0.4% for light vehicles and substantial stability for heavy vehicles (-0.04%). On the main roads the traffic remained almost unchanged, with an increase of 2% for heavy vehicles and a similar decline for light ones.
