Golovkin elected president World Boxing, D’Ambrosi “Occasion to share”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – A Sunday full of news at the World Boxing Congress. From the Sheraton Hotel Parco de Medici in Rome, a day in which the International Federation elected its new president, Kazako Gennadiy Golovkin, the only candidate in the competition for number one. Class 1982, world legend of boxing, Golovkin crowned another dream, after being champion of the world of four English (WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO), Olympic silver in Athens 2004 and from 2024 president of the Olympic committee Kazako and president of the Olympic Committee of the World Boxing, having played a key role in re-admission of boxing in Los Angeles 2028. Vice-Presidents and the entire board of the Federation were also renewed. “I’m here to fight for something important – Golovkin’s words – for the future of boxing itself. We want to protect athletes and sports, with your help we will restore confidence in the world box. All together we can recognize the full recognition of the Cio, not only for Los Angeles, but for all future Olympics.” As for the program, the new president explained that “it is based on four pillars: athletes come first of all, then there is integrity, innovation and financial stability.” The Congress of the World Boxing, which also saw the opening of the presence of the President of the Coni, Luciano Buonfiglio, and his predecessor Giovanni Malagò representing the Cio, also expressed positive opinion towards the decision of the board dating back to May, which makes compulsory the conduct of gender tests to participate in international competitions under the auspices of the Federation. The rule was approved with 41 votes in favour, 9 against and 5 abstentions. Already on the occasion of the World Championships in Liverpool, played in September, the participants had to submit to a genetic test in order to take part in the competitions. On the occasion, the female Welterweight Olympic Champion in Paris 2024, the Algerian Imane Khelif, had been excluded from the event after deciding not to undergo the test.
“Today we are all called to support the new governance, the message must be strong and clear: the World Boxing will build the future of our discipline – the words of Flavio D’Ambrosi, president of the Italian Pugilistic Federation –. We are aware that it will be hard work, we will have to avoid the mistakes of the past, we will have to elevate the quality of the arbitrators and judges, we will have to carefully manage the resources of the World Boxing but above all I am sure that with a synergistic action we will arrive at the finish line to have a strong and cohesive movement. For this reason, I believe that in 2026 it is essential that our athletes compete solely for World Boxing competitions and within the Olympic circuit, in the interest of boxers who must have a single path towards the Olympic dream and for the credibility of our movement”.
