BELEM (ITALPRESS) – Approved the “Global Mutirao”, the final document of the Cop30 of Belem promoted by the Brazilian presidency. After yesterday’s stall due to the absence of fossil fuels in the draft, considered by many to the downfall, and with the displacement of the work due also because of the fire within the headquarters of the summit, the almost 200 countries, absent the US, after two weeks of negotiations unanimously voted the text.
In the approved text there is no reference to fossil sources, although Europe had asked for greater courage for their gradual elimination. The document introduces new negotiating spaces for further effort on emissions with the “Belem Mission to 1.5°”; the document also proposes to triple finance for adaptation by 2035.
It is a compromise text that gives a first answer in an uncomplicated geopolitical context. The themes were different. “There is a political theme with the world that has changed a lot, even compared to a year ago, with a framework of positions and balances at an international level that strongly affect those that are political positions within the context of climate choices,” says the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, at the margin of the vote in plenary.

“The absence of the United States has a meaning, the position of some groups, even linked to the absence of the U.S. can have a meaning. Then there was the discussion of merit that led us to have various objectives. The European Union has always been the most ambitious – he explains – but can be defined satisfied. We have made 20 coordination meetings with positions also articulated because we are different countries and with political guides also different, but in the end we have supported what is the final proposal, to which we have contributed, and we have done so because it maintains what was the path already approved in the previous Cops and therefore maintains the goal”, he assures.
