MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Ettore Messina leaves the bench of Milan. The company announces that the 66-year-old Sicilian coach “has left the position as head coach of the first team. This decision was taken jointly with President Leo Dell’Orco, thus anticipating the transition with Peppe Poeta, who assumes the role of head coach”.
Messina will continue to be part of the organization in its management role, thus ensuring continuity and competence in the club thanks to the experience gained over the years. “I wish to express my sincere thanks to Ettore Messina for the successes achieved together, from the championships won, to the Coppe Italia and Supercoppe, in addition to having reached the Final Four in 2021 – the words of Dell’Orco – with the same conviction, I wish the best to Peppe Poeta, sure he will be able to lead the team with passion and determination”.
The 66-year-old Sicilian coach had been reported in Italy by Olimpia in 2019, after the experience in Nba in the staff of Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. In addition to his position as head coach, he also served as president of Basketball Operations.
After a first season interrupted by the pandemic, Messina conquered the first trophies (Supercoppa Italiana and Coppa Italia) and took Milan to the Final Four of Eurolega, then closed in third place. The scudetto – the first of the three consecutive ones that will arrive under its management – will win it in 2022, then adding another Coppa Italia and two Supercoppe in the box. In Eurolega, however, Olimpia fails to go beyond the regular season (only the quarters of 2022) and last summer in his staff is integrated as vice and heir designated Peppe Poeta.
The passage of deliveries would have to be consumed at the end of the season but four defeats in nine days in the championship and six in 12 rounds of Euroleague prompted Messina to accelerate the times.
