Report Censis, the middle class lives in a feverish state. In 15 years the wealth of families decreased by 8.5%

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – We have gone into the wild age, iron and fire: 30% of Italians now have an unheard of belief, that which autocracies are more suitable for the spirit of times. This is what we read in the Censis 2025 report, which reached the 59th edition. Italy spends more on interest (85.6 billion) than on investments (78.3 billion): 10 times more resources for environmental protection (7.8 billion). The long industrial fall is likely to slip into the icy winter of deindustrialization (the antidote of the rhyme is not enough). And the fever of the middle class rises, despite the art of the Italians. Entering the detail of the report we read that the demographic regression, with the progressive aging of the population and the birth rates in free fall, causes the arrest of the processes of proliferation of small enterprises. In 20 years (2004-2024) the number of business owners has risen from over 3.4 million to just over 2.8 million: -17.0% (almost 585.000 less). Young entrepreneurs with less than 30 years have declined in the same period of 46.2% (almost 132,000 in less).

And if the income of small enterprises (up to 5 employees) corresponded to 17.8% of GDP in 2004, and then fell to 15.7% in 2014, in 2024 reduced to 14.0%. The other pillar also weakens: work. In 2024 the real value of wages was less than 8.7% compared to 2007. In the same period the purchasing power per capita has undergone a cut of 6.1%, despite the recent partial recovery (+2.0% between 2022 and 2024). Thus the middle class lives in a feverish state: in stagnation or, worse still, it risks losing the status conquered over time.

Inflation has heavily influenced household consumption behaviour. In 2024 the prices were higher than 17.4% compared to 2019 and the shopping cart (food goods and care of the house and the person) was more expensive than 23.0%. It is spent more, but it is consumed less. In the five years the cost of food increased by 22.2%, but the volume actually purchased decreased by 2.7%. The scissors are also wide for clothing and footwear: +4.9% in value and -3,5% in volume. Insurance and financial services increased by 47.3% in nominal terms, but the use fell by 2.0%. Financial services alone (equal to 3.2% of household spending, or 40 billion euros) have increased the price of 106.2% in the period 2019-2024.

IN 15 ANNI RICCHEZZA FAMIGLIE DIMINUITA DELL’8,5%

Between the first quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of 2025 (almost fifteen years) the wealth of Italian families decreased in real terms by 8.5%. 50% of the poorest families have seen their wealth decreased by 23.2%, families distributed between the sixth and eighth decile have undergone a reduction of the initial heritage between 35.3% and 24,3%, among the families of the ninth decile the decrease was 17.1%, while 10% of the richest families saw increase their wealth by 5.9%. At the beginning of 2025, 60% of national wealth is owned by 2.6 million households belonging to the tenth decimal. Moreover: 48% of wealth is in the hands of 1.3 million families that make up 5% of the most wealthy families. The share of wealth held by 13 million households that are at the base of the capital pyramid fell from 8.7% in 2011 to 7.3% in 2025.

5,4 MLN DI STRANIERI VIVONO IN ITALIA

There are more than 5.4 million foreigners living in Italy (9.2% of the resident population), but most are in marginal conditions. The 29.0% of foreign workers (who are in total 2.514,000, or 10.5% of employees) is at a fixed time or has a part-time job involuntary (among the Italians the corresponding share stops at 17.2%). 29.4% carry out an unskilled job (8.0% among Italians) and 55.4% of foreign graduates are overqualified, that is it has a too high degree of study for the work done (18.7% among Italians). 35.6% of foreigners live under the threshold of absolute poverty (7.4% among Italians). We are inclined to look favourably at foreigners when they carry out laborious and unskilled jobs, or when they greet the elderly and children, but we are not likely to grant them the same citizenship rights as the natives.

63% of Italians think that immigrants’ incoming flows are limited, 59% are convinced that a neighborhood is degraded when there are many immigrants, 54% perceive foreigners as a danger to national identity and culture, only 37% would allow access to public competitions to those who do not own Italian citizenship and only 38% are favorable to grant foreigners vote in administrative elections.

AUMENTA ASPETTATIVA DI VITA, NEL 2045 OVER 65 ANNI IL 34,1% POPOLAZIONE

Italy continues to grow old quickly. People aged 65 and over account for 24.7% of the population (14.6 million people): they were 18.1% in 2000 (10.3 million) and 9.3% in 1960 (4.6 million). Life expectancy reached 85.5 years for women and 81.4 for men: about 5 months more only in the last year. And the centennials, 594 in 1960, became 4,765 in 2000, today are 23.548. In 2045 people aged 65 and over will be increased by almost 4.5 million and will reach 19 million (34.1% of the population). The desire to prolong existence by escaping illness is the rule that unites the new generation of elders. A tendency to live as adult ethers, without limitations related to age progress. With the awareness of safeguarding and transmitting resources in inheritance, not only materials, of which young generations cannot enjoy in equal measure.

Positive signs are also in this case from the first six months of 2025, when the bags in Rome were reduced by 13.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. Both in Rome and in Milan increase the robberies in public via. In Milan in 2024, 2,624, an increase of 32.1% compared to the pre-Pandemia year. According to 72% of Italians, people no longer believe in parties, political leaders and parliament. 63% are convinced that every collective dream to be recognized has turned off. The only leader with a global projection that gets the trust of the majority of Italians (60.7%) is Leo XIV. On the one hand there are the European leaders – our new political pantheon – with their faces as boxers played, under the blows blurred from east and west.

Instead of reassuring, exercising the traditional function of the political offer, possibly with the recourse unjusted to lies, they announce the catastrophe, they put us in front of the danger of death: the imminent war, the irreparable loss of competitiveness of the continent, the ineluctable demographic drift, the inarginable tide of migrants, the climatic collapse. On the other hand there are the Italians, for which the red alarm is not triggered: the apocalypse can wait. There is no mention of radicalization temptations: for 47% the political divisions and violence that shake the United States are unthinkable in our society. And an Italian military intervention, even if an ally country of NATO is attacked, is disapproved by 43%. 66% believes that if Italy was forced to cut social spending, then we should give up strengthening defence.
