Mattarella “Volunteer is a gym of concrete democracy” / Video

PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – “The proximity makes our lives better and rewarding. Some skeptical wonders what volunteering is for, but Istat tells us that almost 5 million people dedicate their time every year not to themselves but to others: This represents a great heritage based on gratuitousness and a commitment both organized and individual that reflects a community not folded on itself, but which develops social cohesion values.” Thus the president of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in his intervention at the closing ceremony of ‘Palermo Italian Capital of Volunteering 2025’, at the Teatro Massimo, in the Sicilian capital.

“Volunteer is a powerful lever to give closeness, human warmth, fraternity and a sense to social relations, with particular attention to fragility – continues Mattarella, – Palermo has honored its commitment as ‘Italian Capital of Volunteering 2025’: from the Florence flood to the earthquake in Irpinia to recent events, a long calendar of solidarity could be completed. Volunteering and experiences are one of the factors of our country’s unity: It is thanks to it if today we have strengthened the Civil Protection, moreover it accompanies the meaning to the daily life of people following the constitutional principles of participation and solidarity. The gratuitousness can appear a term fallen into disuse or an ingenuity illusion outside of reality, but on the contrary its actions are a concrete drive to construct the common good: volunteering is a gym of concrete democracy and can enter vital force in institutions and it is necessary at a time of fears fed by toxins that obscure the future. I thank the volunteers for the commitment you put on the field every day.”.
