Maneuver, Schlein “School be among priorities, teachers should be paid better”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “For us, public education is the first great lever of social emancipation, inequalities are fought from the first years of life. A child in Reggio Calabria has five years less life expectancy than a peer in Bologna. Italy is already too divided, so much for differentiated autonomy. This latest measure will deal the country’s schools a lethal blow.” This was stated by PD secretary Elly Schlein in an interview with the newspaper La Repubblica. “Teachers should be paid better, since today they are among the worst paid in the developed world,” she continued. “If the school is precarious, if research is precarious, the future of the country is precarious. This government does not believe in the future of the country. Teachers must be given back social dignity. It is not just a question of teaching quality, it is democracy. “I am asking for a greater economic effort, already in the next maneuver, but the truth is that the Meloni government has made two maneuvers forgetting schools and the right to study,” the Dem leader stresses. “We need to make choices, indicate priorities. School is among the priorities, along with health, productive activities, wages and the environment. On some issues we must continue in the wake of the European Next generation, but teachers’ salaries are a state responsibility. European funds, however, need to be used more intelligently,” says Schlein again, who explains, “We need to bring down the fees for access to kindergartens. In some Italian regions we are experimenting with a good way of doing inclusion by opening the service to everyone. This is exactly what politics is about, choosing what to do.”
