WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – During a stop in Pennsylvania, President Donald Trump tried to stress his commitment to inflation, but the rally quickly turned into a political tone focusing on immigration.
In front of those gathered in the conference room at Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono, the president assured that “inflation is no longer a problem” and accused the Democrats of building what he called “a buffalo” on the theme of the so-called “accessibility”, claiming that price rise is the responsibility of the previous administration. In support of this thesis, he showed a chart comparing the price increases recorded during the mandate of his predecessor with those detected after his return to the White House. His words, however, soon moved to immigration, with tones that recalled statements already emerged in his first term. Trump wondered why the U.S. welcomed immigrants from countries that he called “disasters, dirty, haunted by crime”, citing Afghanistan, Haiti and Somalia, and asked why there are no more arrivals from countries like Norway and Sweden.
The event, officially organized by the White House, assumed the setting of a real rally, proof of the strategy with which the president intends to maintain high mobilization of his base in view of the mid-term elections of next year. Despite the support shown by the public of Mount Pocono, the political difficulties for Trump and the Republican Party remain obvious. While the president spoke, in Miami voters chose Eileen Higgins as the first democratic mayor in almost thirty years, defeating a Republican candidate supported by the White House leader. Monroe County, a mountainous area linked to tourism and returned to vote for Trump last year after supporting Biden in 2020, is one of the key territories that the president aims to consolidate. However, the persistent concern of Americans for the cost of living – aggravated by the increase in prices following the introduction of more extensive duties – continues to weigh on the ability of the administration to transform the consent of the base into a broader and more stable support.
