THE SMIT COFFEE – Atalanta Shine With Stunning Comeback vs. Chelsea. Inter Suffer Another Bitter Night

La Dea overturn the world champions with a brilliant performance, while Inter fall again in the final minutes: the late penalty against Liverpool weighs heavily.

Good morning, everyone. Today’s coffee — a proper espresso, just the way we like it here at SMIT, Soccer Made in Italy — is dedicated to last night’s Champions League action. It was a fantastic night for Atalanta, who came from behind to defeat a true giant of European football: a team currently holding the world title after winning the Club World Cup in the United States just a few months ago, and fresh off a Conference League triumph last season.

We’re talking, of course, about Maresca’s Chelsea. Atalanta’s victory becomes even more impressive when you consider that the Blues ended the first half in front. But after the break, we witnessed a remarkable comeback built on determination, sacrifice, desire, and the unrelenting support of the home crowd. A comeback that delivered three crucial points for La Dea’s Champions League campaign.

If the night in Bergamo was triumphant, the same can’t be said for Inter. The Nerazzurri had started their Champions League journey brilliantly, winning every match — helped, as we noted on SMIT, by a favorable schedule — but the tone has suddenly changed. Against Liverpool came their second straight defeat, once again arriving in the dying moments, echoing what happened in Madrid against Atlético, a situation that already proved costly at the time.

In my view, the penalty awarded to Liverpool with two minutes left was… let’s say somewhere between generous and nonexistent. But it’s equally clear that Bastoni could have avoided putting himself in that position: with his opponent racing toward goal and the ball clearly heading forward, more caution was required. Instead, Inter ended up conceding a decisive and damaging penalty that settled the match and deepened their frustration.

This second loss doesn’t ruin Inter’s European campaign — their strong start still puts them in contention — but the disappointment of that final mistake, combined with the bitterness of a penalty that should never have been given, leaves a lingering sense of frustration on a night that could have told a very different story.
