Two-sided export: South and Islands falling, sign more for the rest of the country

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In the third quarter of 2025, Istat estimates a conjunctural growth of exports for all territorial divisions, excluding South and Islands (-0.9%). The conjunctural increase is wider for the Centre (+3.2%) relatively more contained for the Northwest and Northeast (for both +2.4%). In the period January-September 2025, the tendential growth of national exports in value (+3.6%) is a synthesis of differentiated territorial dynamics: increase foreign sales for the Centre (+14.3%) and, to a more limited extent, for the South (+3.2%), the North-West and the North-East (for both +1.9%), while a wide contraction for the Islands (-7.3%).

In the first nine months of 2025, the Italian regions that record the most marked annual increases in export value are: Friuli-Venezia Giulia (+22.5%), Tuscany (+20.2%) and Lazio (+14.0%). On the contrary, the broadest tendencies of exports concern Basilicata (-12.1%), Sardinia (-11.5%), Molise (-7.7%) and Sicily (-5.1%).

In the same period, the increase in sales of pharmaceutical, chemical-medicial and botanical articles from Tuscany, Lazio, Lombardy, Campania and Abruzzo explains for 3 percentage points the annual growth of the national export; a further positive contribution of 1.2 percentage points comes from the major exports of base metals and metal products, excluding machines and plants, from Tuscany and transport, excluding vehicles, from Friuli-Venezia Giulia. On the other hand, minor sales of sports items, games, musical instruments, precious, medical instruments and other n.e.c. products. from Tuscany, of coke and petroleum products refined by Sicily and Sardinia, and of motor vehicles from Piedmont and Campania provide a negative contribution equal to -1,1 percentage points.

In the first nine months of 2025, the most positive contributions to the tendential growth of the national export derive from the increase of the sales of Tuscany towards France (+49.5%), Spain (+85.4%), Switzerland (+101.7%), United States (+12.5%) and OPEC countries (+40.4%), Lazio towards the United States (+74.2%) and Friuli-Venezia Giulia towards the United States (+55.3%) and Germany (+67.5%). The largest negative contribution, on the other hand, comes from the decline in Tuscany’s sales to Turkey (-44.7%).

In the provincial analysis of the export, we point out the positive performances of Florence, Trieste, Frosinone, Varese and Arezzo; the wider negative contributions come from Milan, Syracuse, Cagliari, Siena and Venice. “In the third quarter of 2025, excluding South and Islands, export records a positive economic dynamic for all distributions – comments Istat –. On an annual basis, export in value is confirmed to be strongly growing for the Centre; exports to other distributions are also increasing. In the first nine months of 2025, the trend of export is mainly driven by the major sales of the Centre regions. Tuscany and Lazio provide the most positive impulses, helping to explain more than three quarters of growth on an annual basis of national exports. On the contrary, Sicily and Sardinia provide the most extensive negative contributions.”.
