Approve technical and operational indications for sustainable biomethane in the ETS system

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The ETS Committee approved the “Technical and Operational Indications” that regulate the use of sustainable biomethane in stationary plants that fall within the perimeter of the European emission quota trading system. The guidelines define in a timely manner the ways in which to demonstrate the sustainability of biomethane and the documentation that operators must make available to auditors for the purposes of applying the emission factor equal to zero. The document takes into account the national regulatory framework, the Origin Guarantees system and sustainability certification schemes, offering operators a tool to integrate biomethane into industrial processes in full compliance with the European Union Regulations.

“Now companies – Minister Gilberto Pichetto explains – have a clear and certain framework to use sustainable biomethane within the ETS system. It is an important step in accompanying competitiveness in a decarbonization context of industry, in particular the most energetic sectors, enhancing a strategic renewable resource in line with European climate objectives.” The ETS Committee is an interministerial body chaired by MASE and attended by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport, Economy and Finance, Ministries of Justice, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Department of European Affairs of the Presidency of the Council.
