MADRID (SPAGNA) (ITALPRESS) – On the occasion of the Memory Day 2026, which celebrates the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp of Auschwitz – Birkenau (27 January 1945), the Italian Institute of Culture of Madrid, in the presence of H.E. the Ambassador of Italy in Spain, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, proposes a special event dedicated to memory and reflection on civil courage. The appointment is scheduled for Wednesday, January 27, with public entrance at 19:30, and previews the projection of an extract of the Italian film “Perlasca – An Italian hero”, directed by Alberto Negrin, with subtitles in Spanish. The event will be held at the headquarters of the Institute, Calle Mayor 86, Madrid. The film tells the extraordinary story of Giorgio Perlasca, an Italian citizen who, between December 1944 and January 1945, during the Nazi persecution against the Jewish people of Budapest, saved thousands of lives thanks to his courage and collaboration with Spanish ambassador Ángel Sanz Briz.
The story of Perlasca interweaves the destinies of Italy, Spain and Hungary and represents an emblematic example of civil responsibility, courage and humanity. For his extraordinary commitment, Perlasca was honored by four nations: Hungary, Spain, Italy and Israel. The event, curated by Rav Pierpaolo Pinhas Punturello, will also take part Eva Leitman- Bohrer Benatar, who survived the events of Budapest in 1944, born in June of that year. The Italian Institute of Culture in Madrid invites citizens and students to participate in this event, to remember how, even in the darkest moments of history, the courage of a single person can make a difference and save lives.
