ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Every oppression, every manipulation of the principles of freedom, first of all, passes by repression against journalists. It is no coincidence that the most successful regimes immediately compress the spaces of freedom of information, as soon as their work is questioned. We think about what is happening these days in Iran: together with the brutal cruelty of the extermination of the protesters, concealing what happens – the demonstrations of the square, the repression, the killings – was the first concern of a regime, which, from the beginning, tried to block access to sources of information, the spread of news”. This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, receiving in the afternoon the Quirinale participants at the 30th anniversary of the Seminary of Venice for the British press.
“It is only the last example of attempts to hide dissent, social malaise, truth, through the obscurement of the facts that journalists are instead called to testify in every circumstance, especially in the most dramatic ones, such as the conflicts from which theaters try to exclude them, censorship of work or even prohibiting them access – added the head of the State –. A commitment, that of journalism, truth and freedom, which is often paid at high price. In 2025 – as the International Federation of Journalists reports – more than 120 journalists and information operators found death in conflicts, many of them in Gaza.”.
