This year more than ever, New Yorkers feel the pressure of rising costs; rents, loans, food, transport, everything! The staff of the building where you reside is no exception. The “tip” of the end of the year is a simple but important gesture to say: “Thank you for keeping my home and the whole building safe and working.”.
Le mance di fine anno sono obbligatorie negli edifici di NYC?
No. Year-end tips are not mandatory. I am a gesture of appreciation to people who make your daily life safer, simpler or comfortable. The amount – and whether to pay it or not – is a personal choice.
Quanto dovrei mettere a budget complessivamente per le mance di fine anno?
A common guideline is about 1% of its annual income, to be adapted according to personal relationships, the size of the staff of the building and its financial situation. New residents should give what they think is appropriate, not what they think is giving others.
Quanto dovrei dare al personale del mio edificio?
The typical ranges for 2025 in NYC are:
• Portieri & Reception: $40 – $200 per person
• Floor cleaning/porters: $20 – $70 per person
• Superintendents: $75 – $300+
These amounts vary depending on the type of building, the size of the staff and the level of service received.
Remember the tip even if you are not owner but you are for rent.
A word about the quality of service in December: if you notice that the service becomes a little more cared for in this period of the year… it is not an impression. The period preceding the year-end tips is, unofficially, the “season of maximum excellence” in many buildings. Enjoy and return with gratitude. A kind word can have almost the same value as the envelope. I always include a brief message that recognizes a particular service or quality that meant something to me. Recognition becomes motivation.
Happy holidays and good tipping!
