ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Malagò ends with this term. There is no renewal because the law does not provide for it.” Word of Andrea Abodi, minister for sport and youth, who at ‘Casa Sanremò closes to the possibility of a fourth term, or at least an extension until the conclusion of Milan-Cortina 2026, for the number 1 of Italian sport. According to current law, Giovanni Malagò cannot serve more than three terms unlike the presidents of sports federations. But at the same time, the temporal proximity to the Winter Olympics (scheduled for Feb. 6-22, 2026) had prompted more than a few people to speculate on an extension of the term of office to allow the current president to play the dual role of number 1 of the Milan-Cortina Foundation and the National Olympic Committee during the Games. Time, however, is running out. Malagò last September had indicated the end of January as “a reasonable date” by which to figure out whether or not he could stand again. January has passed, the Coni elections will be held next June 26, and the deadline to submit a bid is June 5. Signals from the government have been there, Abodi’s being the latest, but a few days ago there had also come an assist from the deputy prime minister and minister of transport, Matteo Salvini, who said he was in favor of the possibility of Malagò “arriving to accompany the Olympics, then until their conclusion in the spring of 2026.” The Games themselves are on the horizon, and the other hot topic is delays, but Abodi says he is confident. “We found them more then than we found them today,” he said on the sidelines of an event on Liguria European Sport Region 2025. These two and a half years have served to accelerate. I have always said that time has not been our friend and now we have begun to familiarize ourselves with time: we are convinced that we will arrive ready when we have to be ready.”
