ROME (ITALPRESS) – The Vatican is becoming increasingly green thanks to Acea: the photovoltaic glass roof at the entrance to the Vatican Museums, Cortile delle Corazze, and e-mobility charging stations inside Vatican City have been inaugurated. Two projects that will lead Vatican City to be increasingly sustainable as part of the decarbonization process. “This project is part of the energy transition goals,” said Cardinal Fernando Vèrgez Alzaga. “The photovoltaic system and the columns aim at the 2030 horizon to achieve the climate neutrality goal, for this I thank the Acea group. For several years already, the governorate has been committed to the path of energy transition, it is gradually replacing old cars with electric ones, so the new charging stations are very important. The energy context in which we find ourselves requires the development of new energies and renewable ones are the right answer. “The new photovoltaic glass roofing of the Cortile delle Corazze at the entrance to the Vatican museums was completed in record time on the eve of the Jubilee. It will produce electricity from renewable sources. With the realization of this project, the governorate of the Vatican City State implements Pope Francis’ guidelines contained in the Encyclical “Laudato sì” and fulfills the international commitments made by signing the Paris Agreement. The initiative, carried out in just six months despite logistical difficulties, is part of the program to develop plants from renewable sources, optimize water resources and promote electric mobility, created in collaboration with the Acea group. “It is a very important project, a plant composed of 235 photovoltaic panels with very high performance and with this inauguration the Vatican becomes even greener thanks to Acea,” the words of Barbara Marinali, Acea president. “Electricity will be used,” she adds, “from a totally renewable source, carrying on the battle to reduce CO2 emissions. I would call it a renewable beauty project for a unique exhibition space in the world, visited by thousands of people. For us at Acea it is an extraordinary opportunity thus supporting the artistic and cultural sector. Today we are telling about a unique work in the world realized thanks to great teamwork, a non-stop construction site that worked for six months, a complex organization, all this to make Vatican City an increasingly sustainable city.” The president of Acea anticipated that “this is the first step in a piece of initiatives that, together with the Acea group, the Vatican City is going to carry out in order to have a complete energy transition, reaching zero emissions, within this small but great State. “The installations will significantly support, with renewable energy production, the electrical consumption of the Museums and will contribute to lowering the Carbon Foot Print of the State. In addition to the Courtyard of the Corazze, the project also includes the photovoltaic glass roofing of the Vignaccia warehouse in the Vatican Gardens, which will be completed by early next year. Altogether, the two installations, involve the realization of 350 KW of peak photovoltaic power for a total production of about 500 MWh of electricity per year. In the Petriano parking lot, 20 “fast” charging points were inaugurated on 10 columns and 2 “ultra fast” charging points, on an additional column at the side of the entrance to the Paul VI Hall to encourage the spread of electric mobility. -photo Acea press office – (ITALPRESS).
