Air transport, the imperative is sustainable growth

ROME (ITALPRESS) – In 2024, air transport recorded 219 million passengers, a record that represents an important milestone but one that raises questions for the entire sector about European and international policies to boost the green aspect, promoting regulations that encourage sustainable innovation in the sector. Challenges and opportunities arising from the green transition with a focus dedicated to intermodality and the need to adjust the infrastructural capacity of national airports to support the Green Deal: this was discussed during the conference organized by Enac and Luiss School of Law, with the support of Enav and Aeroporti di Roma. “First of all, we remember our friend and distinguished jurist Antonio Catricalà in whose footsteps we set up the Observatory, with the Luiss School of Law, an important cultural laboratory to face, with all the players in the sector, the challenges that await us for the future of air transport, which by now has reached almost 219 million, thanks to the commitment of the government and Enac that, in the post-Covid era, have guaranteed Keynesian interventions in favor of workers,” stressed Enac President Pierluigi Di Palma.

“Further challenge is the green deal, an issue taken very seriously by air transport in favor of developing the innovative mobility of our future and especially that of the new generations. Various initiatives have already been carried out in the airport field, but the important battle, on a global level, is the one related to alternative fuels: we have overcome the idea that it will soon come to hydrogen rather than electric, with the goal of reaching by 2050 the use of bio fuels, involving the policy and industry of our country,” he added. Luiss Guido Carli Professor of Administrative Law and Dean Luiss School of Law, Aristide Police, highlighted how “the conference is an extraordinary opportunity for discussion.” Also present at the proceedings was Enac board member Benedetta Fiorini, who explained how “the concept of sustainability is no longer focused on the mere implementation of environmental aspects, but represents an added value for the territory and an opportunity for social and economic growth, including through intermodality and the optimization of infrastructure capacity. We also think of the great opportunity that comes from intermobility and suborbital flights, which represent the future of innovative, technological and sustainable transportation and mobility.”

The event was attended by industry experts, academics, representatives of public and private institutions, and key aviation players. They discussed solutions for sustainable growth in air transport that respects international climate goals and promotes a resilient and innovative industry. The initiative is part of the activities of the “Antonio Catricalà Air Transport Observatory,” dedicated to the memory of the eminent jurist and inspired by his teachings. The project was born on the basis of the collaboration between Enac and Luiss School of Law, with the support of Enav and Aeroporti di Roma, which has created a fundamental synergy in the air transport sector, characterized by a strong interdisciplinary nature. The Observatory deals with specialized training for various professional figures, promotes scientific dissemination activities through national and international conferences, seminars and conventions, creating opportunities for dialogue between policymakers, academics, institutional authorities, business leaders and aviation law experts, and encourages research on strategic issues.
