Alcaraz “In Rome and Roland Garros I will not be there”

MADRID (SPAGNA) (ITALPRESS) – No Roma, no Roland Garros. Carlos Alcaraz, after retiring to Barcelona and renouncing the Masters 1000 in Madrid, must also give up the next two appointments on earth. After the defeat in the final in Monte Carlo by Jannik Sinner, the 22-year-old murcian had been forced to leave the “Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell” for a problem on the right wrist. An injury that was more complicated than expected and on Monday, at the Laureus Spors Awards, he doubted his presence at the Italic Forum and Paris. “The next exam will be crucial,” he had announced the number 2 of the world, which today on X confirmed that his stop will go beyond the Roland Garros.

“After the results of the exams carried out today, we decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not to participate in Rome and Roland Garros, waiting to evaluate the evolution to decide when we return to the field. It’s a complicated time for me, but I’m sure we’ll get stronger,” Alcaraz’s message. A double renunciation that in key Atp rankings favors Sinner as the Spanish should defend the title both in Rome and Paris.

Next Roland Garros will be the second Slam jumped from Alcaraz after the Australian Open 2023, then for a right leg problem. The Spanish will therefore be two months outside, although in the past it had to deal with a longer stop (out from November 2022 to February 2023). In addition to losing 3000 points in the ranking between Rome and Roland Garros, with its absence it will allow Sinner to be the great favourite on the Parisian red earth: for the 24-year-old South Tyrolean the chance to complete the Career Grand Slam as well as to reduce the gap from Alcaraz – right now ahead 7-4 – in terms of Major vinti. Sinner is sure to stay number 1 in the world at least until the end of the Wimbledon tournament, so until Sunday, July 12th. It would reach 79 weeks in career from number 1, surpassing Stefan Edberg (74) at the eleventh place in the all-time ranking of players who have spent more time at the top since the computerized ATP ranking was introduced in 1973. And it would go at least closer to the tenth place of Lleyton Hewitt, who stayed at the top for 80 weeks in career.
