Alpine skiing, Federica Brignone wins overall and downhill World Cup

SUN VALLEY (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – Federica Brignone won the 2024-2025 Women’s Alpine Skiing World Cup Overall without competing. In fact, heavy snowfall first and wind later forced the organizers of the World Cup Finals in Sun Valley to cancel the two free downhill runs scheduled today. Throughout the Italian afternoon, the jury had continuously postponed the two races, reiterating how the women’s one would still follow the men’s one hour later.

In the end, a blackout in the press room and strong winds led to the cancellation of the two free runs, which will not be made up. Brignone, therefore, puts her second career crystal cup in her trophy cabinet after the one she won in 2020. For her, the downhill specialty ranking will also be handed to her immediately, while for the overall Crystal Ball she will have to wait until Thursday.

The 1990-born Italian champion, Milanese by birth and Valle d’Aosta by adoption, also boasts three Olympic and five rainbow medals, including golds in the combined event in Courchevel/Meribel 2023 and in the giant slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm 2025, as well as, with today’s triumph, five Specialty Cups.

Le parole di Brignone

“I remained aware of what I did and was doing during the course of the season. The tension was there on the day. The schedule was different than usual and I was going to go out there to do my best to play for the World Cup in downhill and winning it is something really special for me. All the work I’ve done came back today.” These were the first words, to the microphones of Sky Sport, of the Valdostan star: “I’m excited, it’s a fantastic day,” she added.

I complimenti di Rulfi

“Days like this don’t happen so often. In my opinion, he’s won very little for everything he’s done in his career, and hopefully the World Cup giant slalom will come tomorrow. This year he has put together everything he has learned in his career. When I arrived in 2015 she had never tried speed and now she has become a multi-purpose athlete. She is an example, together with Goggia, for the whole alpine skiing movement.” So instead, again at the microphones of Sky Sport, Gianluca Rulfi, technical director of women’s alpine skiing.

Goggia lancia la sfida per la prossima stagione

“The cancellation of today’s test took away my chance to play it all the way.
Congratulations to Federica for the results she made.” Thus Sofia Goggia after the cancellation of the downhill in Sun Valley: “Looking at my season,” Goggia continued, “I started well with the comeback in Beaver Creek where I placed second, but the double zero in St.Anton in downhill and super-G was heavy. The shoulder problem affected me a bit in the season finale, but with ifs and buts you don’t go anywhere. There is still a lot to work on skiing. There are still two races left where I will give everything.”
