MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “A dynamic, resilient, responsive market where great passion, new users and new mobility needs coexist. Reading these data confirms the central role of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds in Italy and how much demand has been able to grow even in the face of geopolitical dynamics. If we were to award an Oscar 2024 in the area of private mobility, the prize would definitely still go to motor two-wheelers, but not without forgetting the international challenges and future unknowns that suggest attention on 2025.” This is what Mariano Roman, president of Confindustria ANCMA (National Association for the Bicycle, Motorcycle and Accessory Industry), said, commenting on the 2024 registration figures released in the evening by the association, which mark an overall +10.5 percent over the previous year.
“The success of our market,” Roman added, “is now a fact to be taken into account, the result, yes, of a renewed domestic demand, unceasing from post-Covid to today, but also of the very wide offer of a national and international industry that knows how to interpret it with usable, innovative and sustainable products. It is also important to emphasize how much in this field our country plays an absolute leading role, expressing a value of more than 9.5 billion euros, firmly occupying first place in the eurozone for production, exporting vehicles worth more than 2 billion euros and reaping international sports successes. An industrial heritage to be protected, but also unique prerogatives that lead us to ask the legislature for more attention and support to enable us to compete within an increasingly complex and aggressive global market.”
Getting to the heart of the data, the values of the December market alone-which recorded a growth of 200.68 percent, putting 29,587 vehicles on the road-are significantly affected by the closure of Euro 5 homologation, which has pushed end-of-series registrations (in fact, since January 1, Euro 5+ is in effect for newly registered motorcycles). All segments report, in fact, values largely exceeding the trend of previous months. Motorcycles, in particular, mark an increase of 283.13 percent over December 2023 with 16,762 registered vehicles, while the growth for scooters is 113.54 percent, amounting to 9,823 registered vehicles. Finally, mopeds perform +247.05% and put 3,002 vehicles on the road.
End-of-series sales also affect the overall market, which grows 10.52 percent to a total of 373,313 units. This is still the best result since 2010, when the subprime mortgage crisis had severely affected the two-wheeler market. In detail, motorcycles grew by 14.48 percent to a total of 166,454 units; scooters registered an increase of 7.54 percent to 186,639 registered vehicles; and mopeds, finally, managed to straighten out a market that still lost 4 percentage points in November, closing at +7.45 percent and 20,220 units.
Also benefiting from the end of the series is the market for quadricycles, which in December marks an increase of 82.40% and 1,897 units; but the health of minicars is also attested to by the cumulative result of sales, which during 2024 grew by 28.10% putting 20,422 vehicles on the road (13,285 electric, 65% of the market). The most popular segment is light passenger quadricycles, which grew by 34.44% or 17,929 units. Very good result of electric two-wheelers in the last month of the year, with a performance that marks +21.78% and 520 units sold, a figure not affected by the end of the Euro 5 series, which did not affect zero-emission vehicles. Still, the year ends on a negative note, registering a 16.08% drop equal to 10,170 vehicles sold, but the positive result of the last three months (in September the market was losing 22%) seems to indicate a possible turnaround.
