Assaults on health care workers, CIMO-Fesmed “We must act on prevention.”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The arrest in flagrante delicto announced by Minister Orazio Schillaci, is an excellent initiative, however it is an important downstream measure that applies when the harm has already occurred. The Ministry through the ONSEPS committee has been working on this issue for some time, and measures such as revisiting Recommendation No. 8, namely – preventing acts of violence against health care workers – must be turned into obligations for adoption by companies.” This was stated by Guido Quici, president of the medical union CIMO-Fesmed. “I wonder,” Quici adds, “how many companies in their risk assessment document (DAVR) include a chapter dedicated to preventing aggression but, above all, have implemented the consequential actions with commitment of dedicated resources. Very often we are talking about documents that remain as such, perhaps forgotten in some desk. “But the real challenge,” continues the CIMO-Fesmed president, “lies in recovering that relationship of trust between doctor and patient strongly undermined by the cutback in health care offerings in recent years (fewer services, longer waiting times, more bitterness of patients toward health care providers). At the same time, the reduced presence of doctors and nurses increases the risk of adverse events to such an extent that adequate care is not guaranteed. “After the torchlight procession in Pisa for the late Barbara Capovani brutally killed by a patient,” Quici concludes, “we will demonstrate on Sept. 16 in Foggia for the recent acts of violence in the Polyclinic, but enough is enough because we have crossed the line.
