At the start of the Mase a comparison on wolf management in protected areas, Barbaro: “The goal is to find a balance”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – At the start of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security of the Project Conference which, for two days, will see, together with the heads of the ministry and the maximum exponents of 18 national parks present research data, experiences and good practices in the protected areas on the management of the presence of the wolf.

“For a long time the theme of the wolf has been a land of ideological opposition: on the one hand, who sees it as a danger, on the other who considers it untouchable a priori. It is not the intention of the ministry to go back on the progress achieved with conservation policies, which brought the population of the wolf from about 100 specimens of 1970, when the species was close to extinction, to about 3,500 of today”, said undersecretary Claudio Barbaro.

“This success, however, challenges us, making management and containment policies necessary. For our part there is no will to surrender: no alarmism must be created compared to the indiscriminate wolf’s hypothesis. The aim is to find a balance between conservation, safety of citizens, protection of farmers and safeguarding biodiversity. I am sure that these objectives can also be achieved thanks to the valuable work of the National Parks, engaged in the project Wolfnext, funded by the Ministry and today one of the most important system strategies on the theme,” he added.

During the two days of the Conference, proposals for the future will also be discussed. “The conciliation procedure we are carrying out with the national parks, in line with the ministry’s address since the first day, is producing concrete results. To network the experiences of those who work daily in the territories allows us to intervene effectively, to protect the wolf and, at the same time, of the citizens”, concluded Barbaro.
