PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – Creating and spreading the culture of donation among young people. This is the central message of the day “Donare è donrsi”, the initiative dedicated to raising awareness on the donation of organs, blood and stem cells that took place in the Aula Magna dell’Edificio 12, at the Campus of Viale delle Scienze of the University of Palermo. The event was organized by the athenaeus in collaboration with CRT Sicilia, AVIS Regionale Sicilia and ADMO Sicilia. The rector of the University of Palermo, Massimo Midiri, stressed the social and cultural value of the donation. “Today’s day is important because we must create together the culture of donation, which is a simple gesture that refers to very important meanings such as respect for life, the continuation of life and refers to a concept of community”. According to the rector, promoting this subject within the university also means educating new generations to responsibility towards others: “When you introduce the culture of donation you have the idea of not imagining life as an exclusively personal experience, but as a gift that has been given to you and which can serve to generate another life.” Midiri also drew attention to a critical aspect of the health system: “In Sicily, in Palermo we already have the problem of blood donation because there is always a shortage, there is always a need for blood, especially some types that are particularly rare.”.

Concetta Giliberto, director of the Department of Humanities, Marcello Ciaccio, president of the School of Medicine and Surgery, Antonino Scafidi, director of U.O.C. CRT Operative, Chiara Coticchio and Daniela Macaluso for CRT Sicilia, Roberto Fodrà, president AVIS Municipal Palermo, and Giannantonio Fico for ADMO Palermo “Salvatore Cimilluca”. Among the protagonists of the day also the associations engaged in the promotion of the donation. Simona Pantaleone, president ADMO Sicilia, explained the objective of the activity of the association: “Today’s day is dedicated to donation in general, so organ donation, blood donation and stem cell donation, or marrow.” Pantaleone highlighted the importance of involving young people between 18 and 35, inviting them to become potential donors through a simple typing, to be included in the IBMDR national register. “The Palermo section was born in October 2023, but since then we have done more than 700 types. We enter schools, universities, squares where we think we can find young people who make themselves available.”.

Particularly significant moments have come from the testimonies of those who have lived directly the experience of transplantation. Christmas D’Acconti, transplanted bone marrow, recalled how the donation can change the life of those who receive an organ: “I am here to raise awareness of the donation of the bone marrow, because not only a life is saved, but a family is also saved.” To close the meeting was the testimony of Vita Villi, student of the University of Palermo and liver transplantation only eight months. “For me the gift of organs is life, it is the greatest gift of love that a human being can receive.” The young woman told her story recalling the donor who allowed her to grow and look to the future: “In my case I received it from Joseph who today allows me to dream and simply to live.”.
