MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Three American citizens, two military and one civilian, were killed today in Syria in a militia of the Islamic State Organization (Isis). The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) announced in a statement, stating that three other American soldiers were injured in the attack and that the assailant was killed. The episode takes place in a context of growing collaboration between the United States and new Syrian leadership against Isis.
According to Reuters on 10 November last, citing two high sources, the Syrian authorities have thwarted in the last few months two distinct attempts to attack Isis against President Ahmed al-Sharaa. One of the two plots aimed at hitting him during a publicly announced official event. On November 11, a senior U.S. official revealed that Syria will become part of the US-led international coalition against the Islamic State, with the aim of eliminating the group’s last remaining and disrupting the flow of foreign fighters. The announcement arrived a few hours after the meeting in Washington between Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and US President Donald Trump. Al-Sharaa has stated that his past ties with al-Qaeda belongs to the past and has ensured that he is in contact with the mother of American journalist Austin Tice, who died in Syria in 2012, committing himself to doing everything possible to find out about his case. Tice’s mother, after a meeting with al-Sharaa in Damascus on January 20, reported that the Syrian authorities are determined to bring him home.
“The Italian Defence and Minister Guido Crosetto, deeply grieved for the news of the disappearance of two soldiers and an American civil interpreter, who lost their lives as a result of an attack immediately near Palmira in Syria, express condolence to the Armed Forces of the United States of America and the Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Close to the family of the fallen and wishes for prompt healing to the wounded.” The Ministry of Defense writes about its social channels.
