Automotive, Von der Leyen “2025 CO2 targets will be evaluated over 3 years”

BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) (ITALPRESS) – “There is a clear call for more flexibility on CO2 targets. The key principle here is balance.” This was stated by European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, speaking to reporters at the end of a strategic dialogue meeting with the automotive sector, ahead of the strategy presentation scheduled for Wednesday.

“On the one hand, we need predictability and fairness for the ‘pioneers,’ those who have successfully done their homework. This means that we need to stick to the agreed targets,” explained Von der Leyen. “On the other, we need to listen to the voices of stakeholders who are calling for more pragmatism in these challenging times and for technology neutrality, especially when it comes to the 2025 targets and the associated penalties for non-compliance. To address this issue in a balanced way, this month I will propose a targeted amendment to the CO2 standards regulation. Instead of annual compliance, companies will have three years.”
