NEW YORK (USA) (ITALPRESS) – Extreme climate events are producing huge economic and social consequences, especially in the most vulnerable countries and communities. “To the extent of global needs, it is essential that the Fund for the Response to Perdite and Danni is put in a position to intervene effectively in support of the most vulnerable countries. A priority is to encourage contributions from all sources and overcome the limits of an exclusive dependence on traditional financial instruments.” This is the message from the undersecretary to the Environment and Energy Security Claudio Barbaro to the high-level event “Expanding the finance base: the urgent case for scaling up loss and damage finance”, held in New York on the margin of the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations and promoted by the Government of the Philippines and the Secretariat of the Fund.
In his speech, Barbaro recalled the consequences of climate change on populations and economies, with particular attention to the most vulnerable countries and communities, also expressing the solidarity of Italy to Nepal for the recent events that struck the country. Italy had already announced to the COP28 in Dubai, in 2023, a commitment of 100 million euros in favour of the Fund. The transfer of the entire contribution is being completed.
“Italy is fully committed to building a framework that ensures easy and effective access, especially for smaller, poor and vulnerable countries,” said Barbaro, recalling the need to ensure efficiency in the evaluation of proposals and the ability of the Fund to translate the resources available in concrete actions.
Italy will continue to work, even in view of the COP31, for an effective and accessible Fund, able to involve a diversified base of financiers and to concretely direct support to the countries that have greater need.
