MINSK (BELARUS) (ITALPRESS) – Aleksandr Lukashenko has been re-elected president of Belarus with 86.8 percent of the vote. This is his seventh term in office. In a resolution on Wednesday, the European Parliament called on the European Union not to recognize the legitimacy of the presidential elections in Belarus because of “ongoing and longstanding serious violations of human rights and democratic principles.”
Lukashenko was congratulated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“The regular presidential elections in Belarus ended in a peaceful and working atmosphere.” Thus the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Italy in a note posted on its Facebook page.
“The Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Belarus,” the Belarusian Embassy in Rome further informs, “accredited 486 international observers from 52 countries to monitor the election,” and “the incumbent President of the Republic of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, won the election with 5,136,293 votes, accounting for more than 86 percent of the votes cast.
The Belarus Embassy’s Facebook page further informs that “leaders of several countries, including Azerbaijan, China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have already congratulated A.Lukashenko on his election victory.”
