Biden pardons son Hunter, Trump “abuse of justice”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – U.S. President Joe Biden has pardoned his son, Hunter, who in June was convicted of crimes related to illegal gun possession and in September admitted tax offenses to avoid jail time, breaking past promises not to use the extraordinary powers of the presidency to benefit his family members. Indeed, the Democratic president had said he would not pardon his son or commute his sentence after his convictions in the two cases in Delaware and California. “Today I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. Since the day I took office, I have said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making process and I have kept my word even as I have watched my son be selectively and unfairly prosecuted,” Biden said in an official statement. “The allegations in his cases emerged only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election,” he noted. “No reasonable person examining the facts of Hunter’s cases can come to any other conclusion than that Hunter was singled out only because he is my son, and that is wrong. There has been an attempt to break Hunter, who has been sober for five and a half years, even in the face of relentless attacks and selective prosecutions. In an attempt to break Hunter, they have tried to break me, and there is no reason to believe that they will stop here. Enough is enough,” the US president stressed. “Throughout my career I have followed a simple principle: simply tell the truth to the American people. Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but while I have struggled with it, I also believe that raw politics infected this process and led to a miscarriage of justice, and once this decision was made this weekend, it made no sense to delay it any longer. I hope Americans understand why a father and a president came to this decision,” Biden concluded.
Closely behind came a retort from President-elect Donald Trump, who, in a post on Truth Social says, “”Does Joe’s pardon of Hunter include the Jan. 6 hostages who have been imprisoned for years? This is a huge abuse and failure of justice!” referring to the protesters accused of storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
