WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – U.S. President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House to those who have made significant contributions to the values of U.S. security through public and private initiatives that have helped spread important values such as world peace and prosperity. The award ceremony included 19 dignitaries from politics, music, sports and film.
“For the last time as president, I have the honor of awarding the Medal of Freedom to truly extraordinary people,” Biden said during the ceremony. “We are here to honor their sacred efforts to shape culture and champion the cause of America. For that reason, I want to personally thank you for what you have done for this country.”
Among the honorees who received the award were Bono, frontman of the legendary band U2 and an AIDS and poverty activist who in recent years has been able to bring together Democrats and Republicans for creation to organize important campaigns in the fight against the disease. Also honored were Hilary Clinton, the first First Lady elected to the U.S. Senate, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, a basketball legend who led the Los Angeles Lakers to five NBA championships. Off the court, he is a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist who supports disadvantaged communities through his Magic Johnson Foundation.
Also honored was fashion designer Ralph Lauren, who over the years has been able to redefine the fashion world with a brand that embodies American elegance and tradition, while managing to influence culture, business and philanthropy, particularly in the fight against cancer. Also receiving recognition was two-time Academy Award-winning actor, director and producer Denzel Washington, José Andrés, a renowned culinary innovator who popularized tapas in the United States. His World Central Kitchen provides large-scale aid to communities affected by natural disasters and conflicts around the world. Also recognized were actor Michael J. Fox, science educator William Sanford-Nye, entrepreneur Tim Jill, environmentalist Jane Goodall, entrepreneurs David Rubenstein and George Soros, writer George Stevens, Jr. and renowned fashion icon Anna Wintour. of honorees also soccer star Lionel Messi, who, however, was unable to accept the award in person.
There were also numerous posthumous honorees, including 25th Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, activist Fannie Lou Hamer, Attorney General Robert Francis Kennedy, and businessman George Romney.
