Bilateral Italy-Norway, Rauti meets Petersen “The Arctic Global Strategic Center”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – As part of the first day of the Arctic Circle Rome Forum – Polar Dialogue, the State Secretary for Defense, Senator Isabella Rauti, met the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Norway, Eivind Vad Petersson. The bilateral was an opportunity to reaffirm the historical link between Italy and Norway, rooted in the polar explorations of the past and in the current scientific cooperation in the Great North. “Norway – Rauti has emphasized, which has the delegation of Defense to the specialized environment Artico, subartic and Antarctica – plays a central role in the Arctic dynamics and for Italy the dialogue with Oslo represents an important element of consolidation of the common training activities carried out with the Allies. At the heart of the comparison the safety of the Great North, understood as “balance between deterrence and reassurance, as a condition for ensuring regional stability and development”.

Undersecretary Rauti highlighted “the need to maintain the Arctic as a space for dialogue, cooperation and scientific research, in full respect of the international law of the sea and freedom of navigation”. The senator recalled the new Italian Arctic Policy, “founded on historical attention to the Great North and a long-term vision in the awareness that the Arctic is no longer a geographical periphery but a strategic center of global balances. Italy, the observer state of the Arctic Council since 2013, confirms the role of reliable partners in multilateral governance.”.

Among the other topics covered in bilateral also maritime safety, the protection of underwater strategic infrastructure, the monitoring of the spatial dimension through satellite observation. Italy appreciates the Norwegian model of “Complete Defense”, which integrates Armed Forces, enterprises, local administrations and civil society in the construction of national resilience. Rauti emphasised “the coherence of Italian Defense with Euro-Atlantic commitments, recalling the evolution of NATO posture in the North Atlantic and the Great North, also in the light of the accession of Finland and Sweden, which represented a turning point for integrated regional defensive planning”.
