Borrell “Israel immediately stops attacks on Unifil mission”

BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) (ITALPRESS) – “The European Union expresses grave concern about the recent escalation along the Blue Line and condemns all attacks against UN missions.” This was stated in a note by the High Representative for Foreign and Defense Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell. The EU “expresses particular concern about the attacks by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which have resulted in the injury of numerous peacekeepers,” Borrell continued. “Such attacks against UN peacekeepers constitute a serious violation of international law, are totally unacceptable and must cease immediately.”All actors have an obligation to take the necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect at all times the inviolability of UN premises,” the note continues.”We urgently await explanations and a thorough investigation by the Israeli authorities into the attacks against UNIFIL, which plays a key role in the stability of southern Lebanon,” Borrell further states. “We urge all parties to fully comply with their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UNIFIL personnel at all times and to allow UNIFIL to continue implementing its mandate. The troops and personnel of UNIFIL, to which sixteen EU member states currently contribute, work under difficult conditions in the defense of international peace and security. The EU pays tribute to their professionalism and renews its strong support for UNIFIL’s role. We are also deeply concerned about Hezbollah’s continued rocket fire against Israel, which must be stopped, and IDF attacks in densely populated areas of Lebanon, which cause a heavy toll on civilians and the displacement of many. We urge all parties to respect international humanitarian law, under all circumstances,” the High Representative concluded. The EU reiterates its call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and for all parties to commit to and work for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.”
