Bosch, new hydraulic braking system tested at the Arctic Circle

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Six days, more than 3,300 kilometers and different climate zones, reaching the Arctic Circle: during an unusual test drive, a Bosch development team successfully tested Bosch’s new hydraulic-brake-by-wire braking system for the first time on public roads. This solution completely eliminates the mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the braking system. The driver’s braking request is transmitted to the brake-by-wire system solely as an electrical signal through redundant signal lines. Bosch offers a robust and efficient solution with two independent hydraulic brake actuators: a brake-by-wire actuator and an Esp. Current brake systems, such as Bosch’s integrated brake servo, still provide the required redundancy in case of failure through a mechanical connection to the brake pedal. This coupling via an input rod to the brake pedal is eliminated in Bosch’s new brake-by-wire solution. It is scheduled for market launch in the fall. In addition to the hydraulic solution, Bosch is also developing a purely electromechanical system. The company has already received orders from several vehicle manufacturers and expects that by 2030 more than 5.5 million vehicles worldwide will be equipped with the brake-by-wire system. The by-wire technology enables new pedal concepts with significantly shorter brake pedal travel so as to create space for new interior designs. Its slim design saves installation space and reduces the weight of the brake system. Because both the by-wire brake actuator and the Esp are assigned to different channels of the redundant electrical system, they are able to independently generate the necessary braking pressure on all four wheels in the event of a failure. “With our first long-distance test, we have demonstrated that we can take a brake-by-wire system safely and successfully from the test track to the road,” explained HagenKuckert, project manager. “We performed thousands of braking runs during the journey, were able to obtain important information and data on the behavior of the brake-by-wire system in a wide variety of traffic situations, and compared it with our previous simulations. All this is being integrated into development work to further optimize our hydraulic brake-by-wire system,” he added.(ITALPRESS).-Photo: Bosch press office-
