ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The presidential race in Brazil will go to the ballot. With 99.9% of the votes cast, Flávio Bolsonaro, candidate of the right and son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, is in the lead with 47.03% of the consents, against 45.16% of the outgoing president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The second round is scheduled for 25 October.
Bolsonaro scored 56.1 million votes, against 53.8 million Lula, and presented himself to the favourite dance. The right-wing candidate may benefit from the transfer of votes from other conservative candidates, while the result confirms the advance of the Bolsonarian area even in parliamentary and local elections. Of the 54 select senators, 34 belong to the right or to the extreme right. Carlos Bolsonaro and Michelle Bolsonaro, respectively the son and wife of the former president, while Jair Renan Bolsonaro enters the House. Tarcísio de Freitas, former minister of Bolsonaro, was re-elected governor of the State of St. Paul. Lula recognised the result and raised the challenge for the second round. The president promised to focus the new phase of the campaign on the differences between the two programs and the past of the Bolsonaro family. The vote took place in a climate of strong polarization.
The right has capitalized the dissatisfaction for the cost of life and urban violence, while the Lula camp has evoked the risk of a return of the movement that had supported Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years for the plot aimed at subverting the result of the 2022 elections. The role of Congress will be central in the next mandate: voters were called to renew 513 MPs and 54 of the 81 senators, as well as 27 governors. Senators are particularly important to Bolsonaro’s supporters, as they have the power to initiate impeachment procedures against Supreme Court judges. Donald Trump was also in the middle of the campaign. Lula accused him of wanting to influence the vote in favor of Bolsonaro, while the latter promised to strengthen relations with the US president.
