Brignone masterpiece in Saalbach, is world gold in giant slalom

SAALBACH (AUSTRIA) (ITALPRESS) – Historic Federica Brignone. The 34-year-old from Valle d’Aosta won the gold medal at the World Championships in Saalbach in the giant slalom. The Italian, last Thursday silver in super-G, brings back the tricolor on the highest step of the podium in the specialty after 28 years. The last person to do so was Deborah Compagnoni in Sestriere 1997. Best run time for Brignone, who finished in 2’22″71, trimming almost a second off Alice Robinson (+0″90). Abysmal gap also accused by Paula Moltzan, bronze with 2″62 delay. A hundredth further back is Thea Louise Stjernesund (+2″63). Fifth place for Lara Gut-Behrami (+2″68). Lara Colturi did well, seventh at 3″50. Out in the first run the other Italians in the race, with Sofia Goggia running into a trajectory error as did Marta Bassino. “I really don’t know what to say – exults Brignone, at the fifth rainbow medal in her career considering also the gold in combined and the silver in giant two years ago in Courchevel and the other silver, always between the wide gates, in 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen – It was my dream to win the world gold in giant. After so many second places I finally managed to win gold. It is one of the best days of my career. I am very excited and I think it will take time to accomplish what I did. It was very nice to see my family members in the stands cheering for me.”- photo Ipa Agency -(ITALPRESS).
