ROME (ITALPRESS) – Justin Trudeau has resigned as leader of the Liberal Party, but will remain as premier of Canada until his successor is chosen. The announcement came from Trudeau himself–leading the country since 2015–at a press conference from his Rideau Cottage residence in Ottawa. Pushing Trudeau toward resignation were high tensions within the party, fueled by the unexpected resignation in December of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland. Canada is expected to go to a vote by the end of October.
“As you all know, I’m a fighter and I’m not one to back down,” he explained. “But I’ve always been driven by my love for Canada, my desire to serve Canadians and what is in the best interest of Canadians. And Canadians deserve a real choice in the next election: given the internal party battles, I cannot be the one to lead the Liberals in the next election.”
