Carabinieri raid at Palermo’s Zen, 2 arrests and 87 charges

PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – Carabinieri checks in Palermo’s San Filippo Neri neighborhood, with special focus on the verification of illegal connections to the electricity distribution network and ascertainment of squatting among public housing pavilions. Servicemen from the Palermo San Lorenzo Company, during the execution of a search decree issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Palermo Court, arrested a 20-year-old and a 29-year-old man held responsible, for possession for the purpose of drug dealing, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition and resisting a public official.

Inside a box in use by the younger of the two arrestees, Carabinieri found 182 grams of marijuana and 1.6 kilograms of hashish divided into 16 bricks. In the box of the 29-year-old, who to evade control attacked the military with kicks and punches, the following were instead found and seized: 1.3 kg of cocaine; 2 bricks of hashish weighing a total of about 200 grams; 28,000 euros in cash, believed to be the proceeds of the drug dealing activity; about 550 grams of hashish, already divided into doses; 12 7.65 caliber bullets; and various materials for weighing and packaging the drugs.

The checks carried out by the military, with the support of verification technicians from the Enel company and staff from the Istituto Autonomo Case Popolari, resulted in a total of 87 people being reported to the Judicial Authority in state of liberty for theft of electricity and illegal occupation of public housing, as they were not in possession of assignment deeds, as well as additional ones for crimes, from driving under the influence of alcohol to possession for the purpose of drug trafficking. The Carabinieri also proceeded to the precautionary seizure of 7 rifles, 1 carbine, 1 pistol, 1 crossbow, 120 cartridges of various calibers, 1 kilogram of gunpowder, and the seizure of the sum of 8,000 euros, believed to be proceeds from illegal activities.

In the common areas of the Zen 2 pavilions, also found were 70 grams of cocaine, partly in stone and partly already divided into doses, 209 grams of hashish divided into 215 doses, 1 hashish loaf weighing 60 grams, 146 doses of marijuana, a 22-caliber carbine found to be stolen, and 27 bullets for a 9-caliber pistol. A total of 285 people were identified, 74 vehicles were checked, 5 people were administratively reported to the Prefecture as drug addicts, and 23 traffic sanctions were raised for a total of 18,527 euros in administrative fines.

The seized narcotics were sent to the Narcotics Analysis Laboratory of the Provincial Command of the Palermo Carabinieri for qualitative and quantitative analysis, while the weapons are at the disposal of the Judicial Authority for related investigations. Control activities in the neighborhood will continue in the coming days.
