Catholic University, beginning the academic year: two plans to redesign the future

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “In these months Catholic University and Policlinico Gemelli have been engaged in a wide-ranging process for the elaboration of their respective strategic plans, both based on a pivotal principle: enhancing the profile of non-profit Catholic institutions. This means moving towards educational, clinical and scientific excellence, placing the person at the centre and promoting models based on humanity, solidarity and respect for dignity.” Thus Elena Beccalli, Rector of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Academic Year 2025-2026 of the University in Rome who saw, among others, the presence of the Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci; of the president of the Lazio Region, Francesco Rocca; of Silvio Garattini, president of the Institute of Pharmacological Research “Mario Negri”; the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Alessandro Sgambato; Francesco Landi, Ordinary of Internal Medicine at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.

“In the next three years – the rector continues – the activities of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart will mainly rotate around five connected pillars, rooted in the identity of the University and oriented to generate social impact: the establishment of a school of knowledge integration to strengthen interdisciplinaryity in addressing the great issues of our time; the renewal of content and methodologies of the training offer, favoring quality and conscious use of artificial intelligence and at the same time promoting the development of lifelong leaming through the international platform FutureLear; the valorisation of research and researchers, to consolidate the profile of research university and to attract and retain young talents – continues – the strengthening of interoperability, both to expand our global positioning, through joint accreditations and programs, both to enhance the identity nature through the Africa Plan and the networks between Catholic universities; Finally, the development of fundraising activities, inspired by the idea of gift as reciprocity, to support strategic planning and ensure accessibility to all our paths.”.

The rapporteur also points out that considering “the significant progress of the last year, the ambitious but concrete intention is to bring back the Policlinico Gemelli to the economic draw in the two years 2028/2029, ensuring universal access to care, high quality standards, optimal working conditions for staff and learning for students.” In his inaugural speech Beccalli speaks of the role of the intergenerational alliance where “a longer-life society is not only a society with a higher hope of life, but it is also a place where fruitful and inclusive relationships are held. To return to humanity all the ages of life you must overcome a vacuum of thought, going to build – with creativity and rigor – contexts of inclusive life and communities able to support autonomy and at the same time relationships between generations. In parallel, it is necessary to redefine health and welfare systems, orienting them towards integrated and person-centered models to respond to the complex needs of the advanced age and to ensure adequate care. All this – he points out – needs a shared and multisectoral governance, in which institutions, universities and civil society collaborate to build fairer, inclusive and solidarity communities among generations.”.

Finally, the rector points out that the Roman campus already constitutes “a privileged laboratory in which the alliance between generations takes concrete form through dedicated care and research, together with the elderly and newborns.

In the approach of the 48th National Day for Life, focusing on the theme ‘First Children’, it is a joy to remember that the Gemelli ecosystem is among the main birth centers of the country and the first of Lazio, with over 4,000 parts a year. And in this fruitful intersection between generations that root our hope,” he concludes.
