Cecilia Sala is returning to Italy

The plane from Tehran that will bring back home journalist Cecilia Sala, arrested in Iran on unspecified charges, took off a few minutes ago. The journalist had been in solitary confinement in Evin prison for three weeks: she had been arrested Dec. 19 at the hotel where she was staying, in Tehran. The case had then been linked to the arrest, in Italy, of Iranian citizen Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, but by yesterday Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei had denied the link to Abedini’s arrest, adding that an investigation had been opened to shed light on Sala’s detention.

Since the day of her arrest, the Italian government has been negotiating the release of the journalist, who is now preparing to return to Italy. Cecilia Sala’s parents were informed of the release directly by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni before the news was released by the presidency to newspapers.

The article Cecilia Sala is returning to Italy comes from TheNewyorker.
