Ceo for Life, Inwit awarded for environmental monitoring and prevention

ROME (ITALPRESS) – On the occasion of the “Institutional Presentation Table of the National Task Force – Smart Cities” of the Ceo for Life Awards 2024, INWIT received the “Ceo For Life” award in the Innovation category for its commitment to the development of digital infrastructure to support smart cities, smart rural and environmental sustainability, with a focus on forest fire monitoring and prevention. Michelangelo Suigo, INWIT’s Director of External Relations, Communications and Sustainability, outlined the company’s role as an enabler of digitization in Italy, emphasizing how its digital and shared infrastructures integrate 5G, IoT, AI-enabled cameras and gateways to improve public services and quality of life in cities and rural areas.
“Digital innovations,” he said, “will improve our lives in cities by making them safer (-10 percent accidents, -30 percent theft), faster (-45/65 percent of time in offices), and greener (-10/15 percent emissions), thus much more sustainable. Thanks to our integrated ecosystem of macro-grids (more than 24 thousand towers widely distributed throughout the country – one tower every 3 km) and micro-grids (more than 520 dedicated indoor DAS – Distributed Antenna System – rooftops), on which the transmission equipment of all major mobile operators are hosted, FWAs and IoT sensors, we have already enabled multi-operator connectivity, including in 5G, in more than 100 hospitals, 10 university campuses, several museums, shopping malls or subways, such as the M4 blue line in Milan, the first subway in Italy entirely covered in 5G.”
“Our digital infrastructure not only provides multi-operator 4G and 5G coverage, but also enables innovative solutions that improve urban and rural security, making these places more sustainable. Developing technologies that protect biodiversity and ensure the resilience of our territories is a priority commitment for INWIT, especially in rural areas, where we are implementing solutions to promote more sustainable development. One of the key projects supported by INWIT is air quality and biodiversity monitoring through the installation of smart cameras with artificial intelligence on our telecommunications towers, but we have also developed projects to monitor and prevent forest fires in National Parks and protected areas in a timely manner through IoT sensors and gateways. These activities allow us to make a concrete contribution to environmental protection, consistent with our corporate commitment set out in the Sustainability Plan,” Suigo concluded.
