ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Chronobiology is the scientific discipline that studies the time factor in biological systems. Analyzing how the functions of the organism follow regular and predictable rhythms. The best known rhythms are the circadian ones, which repeat each about 24 hours and regulate many fundamental physiological processes. These rhythms influence functions such as sleep-wake cycle, hormone secretion, metabolism and body temperature.
The core of this system is a central biological clock, located in the hypothalamus, in the brain, acting as an orchestra conductor, coordinating the peripheral watches present in almost all tissues of the human body. “It is a relatively young discipline,” born from “from the fifties of the last century. Chronos and bios, time and life: all starts from the fact that the Earth rotates on its axis in about 24 hours – from which the word is about to say – and all living organisms on Earth, not only man, must be accustomed to an enlightened and dark part.” So Roberto Manfredini, specialist in Endocrinology, internal medicine and cardiology and ordinary professor of internal medicine at the University of Ferrara, interviewed by Marco Klinger for Top Medicine, TV format of the news agency Italpress.
“The first decades of chronobiology have studied physiology, when we began to detect that, for example, in the morning when we rise, we have a peak of arterial pressure and, at the same time, the coronaries are a little more closed, bring a little less blood and the platelets stick more. So we began to study if this ‘chronorischio’ could have a practical extrinsation: already from the eighties and nineties, it has been seen that the heart attack of myocardial, for example, is more frequent in the morning hours, like all cardiovascular acute diseases”.
Are there any special moments to take drugs? “Yes, because it has been known for a few years that the neoplastic cell multiplies in hours other than the healthy cell so, if we disappear a carpeted drug, we kill those healthy as well as those sick and we have all the side effects we know. For some years it has been seen that for some tumors ‘chronotemporize’ some drugs reduces side effects consistently.”.
Also for the time of meals “we must remember that we are day animals, as much as society is trying to move us towards the night. Man must eat in the daylight, he must never eat at night, suffering important problems on metabolism. The advice I can give to all is to have breakfast at 7-8 in the morning, the maximum dinner at 21 and 12 hours of night fasting. The sgarro is always allowed, but if it becomes the rule, you should not be surprised to have high blood sugar or to take weight”.
For Manfredini “forcely correcting an inclination is never a good choice: the natural ‘gufi’ or ‘allodols’ are about 10% of the population and have it in DNA. The danger is those who become ‘gufo’, like the young generations who go ahead with the night, and then will have metabolic disorders in X years.”.
For sports, “for people with risk factors it is better not to go running or doing things in the morning. However, the best performance occurs during the late afternoon, when the body warms up, because the muscle and all metabolic activity is higher.”.
